During the Asian economic slow down of the early 1980s, Mr Chua Ser Keng heard about a special type of fish called Golden Arowana, it was believed that this species of fish would bring its owner Good Luck and Fortune. Believing in its auspicious properties he decided to pioneer a business potential in the selling of Arowanas to aquariums and pet shops all throughout the city.Through his undying passion for the business, he gained an incredible knowledge into the world of aquariums and the innovative techniques that were used to maintain the creatures that dwell in them. Armed with his hard earned experience as an Arowana specialist, he decided to venture into the aquatic pet business by renting part of a clothing store located at Marine Parade.By 1986, Mr Chua Ser Keng's business grew substantially and the store was known to its customers as " Sam Yick".
Sam Yick became a "Chua" family affair, even the young sons spent their entire school holidays in this intriguing aquatic business. By 1993 Sam Yick gained such extensive experience and reputation in the aquatic pet business that it began to specialize in other areas of rearing and selling of small animals.

Burning with the passion for pets, in 1994 the sons instinctively decided to join the retail business following their studies. With more manpower and innovative ideas, Sam Yick entered into an international aquatic trade fair called " Aquarama" in 1995, showcasing innovative aquatic landscapes as a hobby that soon evolved into an obsession.

Second daughter Lay Ching joined the business in 1998 and due to personal interests,soon she became an expert in rearing of small furry animals.With this, the range of Sam Yick Product expanded to cover food and accessories for these furry animals.

This specialty took the sons and daughter overseas to learn from international experts and became part of unique value-added service. In 1999, Sam Yick took on a fresh new look at Marine Parade and at the same time opened a new store at Eastpoint Mall.

A specialized division for landscape design and maintenance was created in the year 2000, in support of all the aquarium and pet requirements. Incredibly, the store expanded further into another unit at Marine Parade, and another 50 square meter at the East point Mall.

In 2002, Sam Yick was rebranded as Sam's Pet & Aquarium and a flagship store opened at United Square.

At Sam's we believe that pets have a therapeutic effect. They can distress and balance your life. We would like to see a pet at every home in Singapore.
Our emphasis now is on educating proper and committed pet care. For this, we plan to spread knowledge we have. And to constantly improve that knowledge by keeping up with all the research. We aim to offer our customers not just a pet but all the knowledge you need to care for your pets really well, all through their lives.
